They focus on today, this week, or this month. Use short-term goals to improve your quality of life and increase your happiness. Schulich Sept 18 Intake A. Hi , I am in middle of drafting my application for Top B school in India. I am really confused regarding the long term goal. I am from technology background working as a Product Owner.

In future all I want to do in build comprehensive technology solution and sell them. Basically move upto executive roles in a technology based Product firm. Does this sound really vague. Do we really need to know the exact product that we wish to work on in long term?

I don't think you have to be very specific in your career essay and mention the exact product you want to develop in years, but you do have to mention the career track that you plan for yourself, the industry you want to work in and the roles you wish to take, and of course link everything to where you are now and the degree you wish to pursue.

Hi Farhan, It is definitely okay for you to figure out where you want to go during your 1 or 2 year course - in fact, most aspirants look at the MBA as a means to expand the opportunities available to them.

However, it is not a good idea to show this ambivalence in your application. This is because admission committees evaluate potential candidates on their employability - and showcasing excellent clarity of goals is one way to demonstrate your employability. If you don't know where you are going, etc. Therefore, my suggestion is to pick one of the 2 options you have mentioned and elaborate on that in your goals essay. Whatever option you pick, make sure that you bring out the following 3 aspects very clearly: Why do you need an MBA to achieve this position progression or shift?

Why is NOW the best time to do this? How can B-school X help you get there? As long as you are able to answer these 3 points effectively, you are good.

And don't worry about sticking to the goal you mention in your application - B-schools know very well that your goals may change during the program, when you get exposure to many new functions, industries and experiences. So, nobody is going to question you about a discrepancy in what you said you want to do and what you actually end up doing!

Tell them that your short term goal is to work in a B2B marketing role with a different company, gain some experience and in years' time, join your family business. Answer the following points in your essays: Why do you want to work with a different company after your MBA? What sort of exposure and experience do you hope to gain? Specify what kind of company you would want to work with - in terms of industry, domain and role.

In the long term, when you join your family business, what is your vision and goal for the business? Make sure you let them know that you have a vision of your own and that you will contribute something valuable to the business.

It really makes a lot of sense. Regards Raman Glad to help, Raman! But pls call me Gowri. General Management, Strategy Schools: Cheers, Yes, I'm afraid it might be. While AdComs do not expect you to know exactly where you will be after you graduate, they definitely expect you to have a pretty good idea about what direction you want to go.

Here are some simple do's and dont's for talking about career goals: Your goal must strike the right balance between 'ambitious' and 'realistic'. Don't cite a goal that is too low-hanging or something impossibly difficult to achieve in the time frame mentioned. Your goal must be something that is in line with your past experience.

You can think of a long-term career goal in concrete terms, like CEO of a high technology company, but we believe there is something powerful and exciting about searching for and describing your "Dream Job.

An outstanding career goals essay will also persuade admissions officers that your career aspirations are achievable. To do so, you want to convince the admission committee that you possess many of the skills, talents and experiences that you will need to achieve the ambitions you write about in the essay. Grand ambitions are welcomed, and even expected, by the top business schools but the other components of your other MBA application such as your resume and reference letters need to convince admissions officers that you possess many of the assets you will need to achieve your future aims.

Defining your career goals is an important step toward earning an acceptance letter from a top MBA program. An effective essay will explain how you plan to become a leader of consequence once you graduate.

The coherence and clarity of your career goals essay can serve as an elegant proof of your potential. Unfortunately, none of us has a crystal ball to tell us what the future holds. As such, crafting an outstanding career goals essay requires both soul searching and determination.

We believe the hard work is well worth it. When you finish your MBA career goals essay, you will have more than just a great business school essay, you will have a clear vision of what you want to achieve in the future and a plan for fulfilling your aspirations.

Talk about how you want to move into a career in Finance and gain a job at Goldman Sachs.

Adcoms want you to dream big, but they also want you to be realistic. Instead, you need to walk the fine line between thinking big and demonstrating that your career path has been well thought out and planned. Look up hiring trends, services, organizations, market status, and competitive concerns within your desired industry and companies. Go step-by-step to illustrate that you know what it takes to reach your high aspirations by first talking about starting as a Finance Manager and slowly working your way up over twenty years.

Adcoms can smell BS. Take time to do your research and dig deep for those specific offerings from the program that will best serve you and your goals. Set up an interview to talk with an adcom or alumni before you write your essay. Then, during that interview, ask questions that will give you the information you need to beef up your essay. If you can talk about how an alum took the same career path and succeeded, you not only demonstrate your interest but your keen intellect.

Finally, make sure you write an essay that is clear and easy to read. Instead, focus on answering the question as simply as possible and including all the necessary pieces. This is not a creativity contest. Instead, create a simple outline that you can fill out to answer the six components of the essay. You should write out the six questions career analysis, short-term goals, long-term goals, why MBA, why School, why now and come up with your answers separately.

Then, once you have the outline and all the pieces, compile them together into a cohesive story. Thanks for a marvelous posting! I genuinely enjoyed reading it, you are a great author.

Will you get in?
